Stuart Florida Fishing
Stuart Sailfish Club
It is one of the oldest sportfishing clubs in the United States, formed for the purpose of promoting the conservation of gamefish and encouraging visitors to fish in Martin County waters. To this day, these remain our primary goals. We attract visitors by sponsoring offshore fishing tournaments and then donate a large part of the proceeds to worthy conservation programs and local conservation organizations.
The fishing tournaments sponsored by the SAILFISH CLUB are oriented toward fun in a family atmosphere. We encourage and reward the participation of female and junior anglers. We strive to make our tournaments affordable by offering awards which are highly desirable, but do not attract the anglers looking for large cash prizes or expensive merchandise, thus avoiding the distasteful practice of administering lie detector tests to the winners.
In recent years, fishery conservation has centered around good fishery management. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Florida Marine Fisheries Commission, created in 1978, are charged with the conservation and management of our fisheries and set the rules for harvesting and utilization of our fisheries by both the commercial and recreational sectors. Over fishing by commercial, and to a lesser extent, recreational fishermen, has collapsed several fisheries that have been or are currently being rebuilt. Those fisheries that have been restored are Atlantic king and Spanish mackerel, redfish and snook. Those in the process of being rebuilt are swordfish, shark, sea trout, red snapper, tilefish and several billfish species. The Stuart Sailfish Club is deeply involved in the management process. The opinions, comments and position papers submitted by the Club are highly respected by Fishery Managers in both groups.
Membership in the Stuart Sailfish Club represents an opportunity to share and build on the traditions of one of the oldest fishing clubs in America. It offers members:
